Welcome to all
Dear SAPC members and those new to our organisation
Making a Difference in Primary Care – SAPC East 2010, 7-9 July, Norwich
The Primary Care Group of the Faculty of Health at the University of East Anglia (UEA) is delighted to welcome you to the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the Society of Academic Primary Care in - SAPC2010. UEA is a modern university on the edge of the beautiful medieval city of Norwich. Its aim as a centre of learning has always been to ‘make a difference’: it prides itself on its interdisciplinarity, its links with the public, and its environmental sensitivity. We shall celebrate all these in our ASM. We want to explore the theme of impacts of our work on different stakeholders, and the main plenary speakers have been chosen to reflect the ‘big issues’ – research and practice, research and the public, research and learning, research and the environment & research and health inequalities.
SAPC East is being hosted by UEA, but the planning and scientific committee is a partnership between the primary care departments of University of Hertfordshire, University of Cambridge, the East of England Primary Care Research Network, the East Anglia Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), and the GP Directorate of the East of England Deanery. We are keen to ensure that non-members who share in our research efforts and outputs play a role in the meeting. This will happen both through panel commentaries and the programme design, where on Friday regionally based primary care attendees can continue into the afternoon with a meeting specifically addressing their needs in translating research into practice.
The SAPC ASM has become famous for its friendliness and variety, and how it reflects the diversity of interests and abilities of academic primary care - SAPC East will continue that ethos. We shall host an excellent scientific programme celebrating the best of primary care research, and will also encourage delegates to take advantage of the wonderful facilities of the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts (SCVA), with some special medical humanities seminars and tours available during the conference.
There are fantastic sports facilities at UEA, both in the Sportspark (Olympic size swimming pool, running track, gym, climbing wall) and around the campus Mere, which invites outdoor activities. The architecture of UEA is famous for its unique ziggurats and environmentally friendly new buildings. Beyond UEA there are the Broads and the city of Norwich itself with its medieval castle, cathedral, and ancient buildings side by side with modern shopping and diverse arts opportunities. Finally, for those wanting to make a weekend of it, we would suggest the coast anywhere from Kings Lynn to Ipswich – you are spoiled for choice with seals, birds, sand sea and sky, sailing, real ale, and miles of beautiful countryside.
The members of the planning committee and their supporters are listed here and each happy to be contacted to give advice about how to make the meeting great, or to answer any queries you may have. Further details of the meeting can be found via the SAPC website, www.sapc.ac.uk/2010, or the Secretariat (Sue Stewart on sue.stewart2@btinternet.com). We look forward to making a difference to your year in 2010!
Yours, Amanda Howe (Amanda.howe@uea.ac.uk ), SAPC Chair and host
