2012 Programme Overview

41st Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Academic Primary Care

Abstract submission deadline 25th March 2012

Submission is now closed.

Recognising our theme of ‘Celebrating Difference’, we have revised the programme and format for submissions for this year’s ASM.

Conferences are a great opportunity to bring people together to share ‘breaking news’ in primary care teaching and research – letting people know about what we’ve been doing. But they also offer time and space for stimulating new conversations and new thoughts. Our intention is to encourage a Festival of Dangerous Ideas’ at this year’s Conference. We remain committed to the highest standards of academic practice; underpinned by a commitment to scholarship - discovery, application, integration and teaching (Boyer 2000). We want to encourage debate and discussion: both within the meeting but which also continues and extends beyond it.

  • Critical conversations that challenge ourselves, and others, to consider whether we need to do things differently – be that policy, practice, teaching or research
  • Creative conversations: ‘blue sky’ thinking that generates the new ideas which supports innovation and change
  • Shared conversations that tell others about what we do - be they fellow academics, front-line staff, or the public. To demonstrate to an external audience why our work, and our discipline of academic primary care, matters

We wish to encourage the exchange of new ideas whether nascent or realised, wise or whacky: what is important is that they are interesting and have the potential to change the way we think and work. They could be ideas for research, education*, health care practice or policy.

(*Education abstracts: we wish to encourage the submission of educational abstracts whether they are descriptions or evaluations of ideas or innovations or more rigorous educational research.)

We also encourage you to think about how you present your ideas and work: both within the abstract and, if your abstract is accepted, at the ASM. We have extended the word count for abstracts to reflect the changes for this year.

This year’s programme includes both submitted and invited presentations, including:
