The British Psychological Society Division of Health Psychology (DHP)
The BPS Division of Health Psychology (DHP) currently has about 1600 members, and will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2011, having started as the Health Psychology Section in 1986 and becoming a BPS Division in 1998. Among its activities for members, the DHP holds an annual conference, provides continuing professional development courses, communicates via its website, social networking and publications, promotes professional activities with bursaries and internships, and makes awards to recognise excellence in health psychology. The DHP promotes health psychology to the public, other professions and to policy makers, via the activities of its publicity and liaison, research and practitioner groups. It also plays a major role in issues to do with the training and development of Health Psychologists.
North American Primary Care Research Group
The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) is a multidisciplinary organization for primary care researchers. Founded in 1972 and oriented to family medicine, NAPCRG welcomes members from all primary care generalist disciplines and related fields, including epidemiology, behavioral sciences, and health services research.
UK Society for Behavioural Medicine
UKSBM works towards integrating knowledge of biology, behaviour and the environment to prevent and treat disease. Behavioural Medicine is an interdisciplinary field, bringing together social, behavioural, and clinical scientists with practitioners.
European Forum
The European Forum for Primary Care was formed in early 2005 by a group of interested parties from several countries. The Forum aims to improve the health of the population by promoting strong Primary Care: through advocating for Primary Care, by generating data and evidence on Primary Care, and by exchanging information between its members.
WONCA Europe
Wonca is an acronym for the World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians, or World Organization of Family Doctors for short.
Wonca Europe is the European regional branch of Wonca. It has more than 40 member organisations and represents more than 45,000 family physicians in Europe. Wonca Europe has about 400 direct members.
The society's objective is to improve the quality of life of the peoples of the world through fostering and maintaining high standards of care in general practice/family medicine by providing a forum for exchange of knowledge and information; encouraging and supporting the development of academic organizations of general practitioners/family physicians; and representing the educational, research and service provision activities of general practitioners/family physicians before other world organizations and forums concerned with health and medical care.
The society aims to stimulate networking among GPs with an interest in professional development, research, education and quality improvement. To this end the society arranges an annual European conference and other meetings.
The Primary Health Care Classification Consortium contributes to the wider goals of WONCA and WONCA Europe.
OUR COMMITMENT TO MULTIDISCIPLINARY WORKING
Multidisciplinary working is fundamental to the aims of the SAPC to "enhance primary care through academic excellence." Primary care, and general practice, are characterised by complexity and diversity. Promoting multidisciplinary membership of the organisation, and multidisciplinary links with other organisations, reflects the realities, opportunities and challenges of the health care setting. Different disciplines offer unique perspectives with regard to theory and method for understanding and developing general practice and primary health care.
In order to provide support for multidisciplinary working we need to recognise both our shared goals and interests, and also the different issues experienced by/across disciplines working in academic primary care. This is a core theme of our ongoing work with our membership, and in the development of partnerships and collaborations with other related organisations.
We are currently planning a new survey of the APC workforce with a focus on multidisciplinary issues. This will serve to both highlight progress and success, as well as identifying the challenges still facing us.
We will post further details on this page as the work evolves.
