Research

Primary care research is changing.  Traditionally, much academic primary care work was concentrated in University Departments: with researchers and teachers working alongside each other to develop, deliver and evaluate the discipline. The Society for Academic Primary Care grew out of the former Association of University Departments of General Practice, and the Heads of Department (HoDs) group continue this focus on university based primary care research. Recent restructuring of some university departments has led to some primary care departments being integrated into larger research (and educational) groupings, but with primary care research still  active in these organisations.

Here is a list of current University departments and research groups, including an overview of their areas of research and a link through to individual websites for more detail and people to contact.

In recent years, new centres and groupings for primary care research have emerged. In 2007, the Primary Care Research Network was established in England to expand clinical research in the primary care setting. It consists of eight local research networks which seek to coordinate and support/facilitate the conduct of primary care research.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) was established by the Department of Health with a vision to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research. NIHR has now established the NIHR School for Primary Care Research in England with a focus on research which improves everyday practice in primary care.

Similar initiatives in Scotland have led to the development of both the Scottish Primary Care Research Network and the Scottish School of Primary Care.

Wales has also established a Welsh School for Primary Care Research.

In Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network includes an active primary care theme.
